Engel Burman Group, a Garden City-based real estate developer specializing in assisted living facilities, recently signed a long-term land-lease with Nassau University Medical Center for approximately 20 acres of the 64-acre A. Holly Patterson campus in Uniondale.

The developer plans to construct rental housing consisting of one and two-bedroom apartments, subject to obtaining the required zoning approvals. The project has yet to obtain the necessary permits, and the expected timeline and cost of construction are not yet clear.

Engel Burman has expressed its commitment to work with the John J. Byrne Community Center to provide a community center at the campus, a requirement of the deal. In a series of Uniondale meetings, Steven Krieger, a partner at the Engel Burman Group, stressed the firm’s philosophy of aligning with the communities in which they operate and emphasized the company’s willingness to collaborate with the center to aid in providing a facility for the community’s youth.

“I am excited to be partnering with Engel Burman Group to bring a much-needed community center to Uniondale,” said David Greaves, President of the John J. Byrne Community Center. “This project will provide a modern, 45,000 sq. ft. facility, including athletics fields, and space for programs that will cater to the children and families of Uniondale.”

The developer’s commitment, which stems from an agreement between Nassau University Medical Center and the Uniondale Neighborhood Center, will result in an ongoing collaboration between the center, Engel Burman Group, NuHealth (NUMC), and other potential developers of the A. Holly Patterson properties. The community center is expected to benefit Uniondale residents by providing a space for recreational and educational programs.

“I am delighted that our partnership with Engel Burman Group will help create a brighter future for the Uniondale community,” said a representative from the Uniondale Neighborhood Center.

While details about the project are still emerging, the signing of the land-lease is an important step towards improving the quality of life for Uniondale residents. Visuals of the site or proposed plans are not yet available but will be shared as soon as possible.

“John J Byrne Community Center in Uniondale, New York, provides recreational, after-school, and community development programs in one physical infrastructure to help promote youth and community well-being.”
